The death toll from the devastating flash flood that struck the Himalayan region on Wednesday has climbed to 750, with 734 bodies recovered in Nepal and 16 in Tibet, according to officials in both countries. The disaster remains one of the deadliest natural catastrophes of 2026.

Thousands Still Missing

Nepalese disaster management authorities report that approximately 2,500 people are still unaccounted for, including 589 foreign nationals. Combined with the missing in Tibet, search teams are looking for nearly 3,000 people. Most bodies in Nepal have been found far downstream in Chitwan district, near the Indian border — dozens of kilometers from the initial disaster zone.

Risk of Further Flooding

Emergency services warned residents in the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading regions to stay alert for possible new flooding along the Bhotekoshi River, which carried enormous volumes of mud and debris during Wednesday's catastrophe, causing destruction across dozens of kilometers.

International Relief Arrives

India and China have dispatched expert teams to Nepal to assist with rescue operations. One of the focus points is a hydroelectric plant on the Trishuli River, where workers are believed to be trapped inside a tunnel blocked by debris and mud.

Glacier Collapse Triggered the Disaster

The catastrophe began when part of a glacier broke away, unleashing an avalanche of ice, rocks, and mud that turned into a violent torrent flooding rivers throughout the region. Houses, hydroelectric facilities, and bridges were swept away. Chinese scientists note that it took only six to seven minutes for the mud flow to travel from the Nepalese side to the Gyirong border crossing.

Researchers attribute the disaster to climate change: warming temperatures have accelerated glacier melt in the Himalayas, destabilizing mountain slopes and increasing the risk of large-scale landslides. Himalayan glaciers are now melting faster than at any point in recorded history, making such catastrophes more frequent and more severe.
