Hungarian FM Calls for Dialogue on Ukraine Minority Rights
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto renewed calls for a constructive dialogue between Hungary and Ukraine regarding the rights of Hungary's ethnic minority in the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine. Szijjarto emphasized Budapest's position that the rights of the approximately 150,000 ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine should be protected under international standards.
Minority Rights Dispute
The issue has been a persistent source of tension between the two countries. Hungary has repeatedly conditioned its support for Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration on the improvement of minority language and educational rights, particularly regarding Hungarian-language schooling.
Ukraine-Hungary Relations
Relations between Budapest and Kyiv have been strained throughout the war, with Hungary often taking a different stance from other EU members on Ukraine-related sanctions and support measures. Dialogue on minority issues remains an ongoing diplomatic challenge.
