India's 'Cockroach' Protesters Plan Return to Delhi Despite Police Crackdown
India's youth-led protest movement, nicknamed the 'cockroaches' or 'Abhijeet Dipke' movement after one of its arrested leaders, is planning to return to the streets of Delhi for a fresh demonstration. The move comes after last week's protest was met with mass detentions and the jailing of two prominent leaders.
The protesters, whose movement has been called the CJP (for their Telugu acronym), have adopted the cockroach nickname to signal that they cannot be easily crushed — like the insect, they plan to survive and return no matter how many times they are swept aside.
The protests center on demands for better government accountability, access to employment, and an end to what demonstrators describe as the suppression of youth voices. The mass arrests last week drew significant attention and condemnation from civil society groups across India.
Authorities have warned that another unauthorized demonstration would be met with similar law enforcement action. The movement's leaders say they remain committed to peaceful protest and are preparing legal support for those detained.
