International Press Institute Calls on Austria to Explain Arrest of Ukrainian Journalists

1 min read
The International Press Institute (IPI) has called on Austrian authorities to provide a full justification for the arrest of Ukrainska Pravda journalist Mykhailo Tkach and his cameraman Bondarenko, as well as for the seizure of their professional equipment. The IPI called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances of the arrests and demanded Austrian authorities clarify the legal basis for the detention of the two journalists. The organization expressed serious concern about the manner of the arrest and the potential chilling effect such actions could have on journalistic work in Europe. Press freedom groups have closely monitored the case since news of the arrests broke. Multiple organizations have emphasized that any arrest of journalists must comply with international standards protecting the freedom of the press and must not be used as a mechanism to suppress investigative reporting. Ukrainska Pravda is widely recognized as one of Ukraine's most important investigative news outlets. The detention of its journalists on Austrian territory has prompted diplomatic engagement at the highest levels, with Ukraine's foreign ministry pressing Vienna for explanations. Austrian authorities have confirmed the release of Tkach but have not provided a detailed public account of the charges, evidence, or investigative theory underlying the arrests.
