Iran Sets Seven Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz to US

1 min read

Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the United States fulfills seven specific conditions, the country's parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf declared.

"The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is completely clear and unambiguous," Ghalibaf said, as quoted by Iranian state news agency IRNA. "The Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until our seven conditions based on the Islamabad Declaration of Intent are met."

According to reports, Iran's demands include ending the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and ships, lifting the ban on oil exports, unfreezing Iranian assets, canceling all sanctions against Iran, and ending military operations against Iran and its regional allies including Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Iran reportedly transmitted its list of conditions to the US government through Qatari intermediaries. It is considered unlikely that the US government will accept all of Iran's maximum demands. The US-Iran conflict continues to weigh heavily on global oil trade.
