Iranian Footballers Who Sought Asylum in Australia Granted Citizenship

Two Iranian women footballers who sought asylum in Australia during the Asian Cup tournament have been officially granted Australian citizenship. Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh received their citizenship documents in a ceremony in Brisbane, presented by Interior Minister Tony Burke.

Silent Protest Led to 'Traitor' Label

The two players had refused to sing the Iranian national anthem before their team's opening match in Australia, a gesture interpreted as a sign of resistance against the authorities in Tehran. Iranian state media subsequently labeled them and their teammates who joined the silent protest as 'traitors.' Seven members of the national team had originally applied for asylum, but five eventually withdrew their applications and returned to Iran, reportedly due to pressure being placed on their families back home. Their current situation in Iran is unknown.

A New Beginning in Australia

Ramezanisadeh, 34, described the ceremony as one of the happiest days of her life: 'After everything we went through, and all the challenges we faced, this moment means more than words can express.' Her 22-year-old teammate Pasandideh called the citizenship 'not just a document — it's a new beginning and a place I can proudly call home.' Both players had been photographed training with the Australian club Brisbane Roar shortly after their asylum applications, and the club congratulated them on their citizenship.
