Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz has unveiled a controversial military strategy to systematically demolish residential buildings in southern Lebanon's border villages, aiming to establish a permanent security buffer zone akin to the one in the Gaza Strip.
According to reports from The Times of Israel, Katz detailed that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will level structures in Lebanese communities adjacent to the border. He cited the extensive destruction in Rafah and Beit Hanoun in Gaza as the blueprint for this operation, stating the objective is to "once and for all eliminate threats near the border."
"Upon the completion of the operation, the IDF will establish a security zone within Lebanese territory... and will maintain security control across the entire area up to the Litani River," the Defense Minister announced.
The proposed military action will have massive demographic consequences. Katz emphasized that Israel will strictly prohibit the return of "over 600,000 residents of southern Lebanon" to their homes. This ban will remain in effect "until the security of northern Israel's residents is ensured."
Outlining the broader geopolitical objectives, Katz declared: "We are determined to separate Lebanon from Iranian influence – pull the snake's teeth and deprive Hezbollah of the ability to threaten." He added that Israel intends to fundamentally "change the situation in Lebanon" by maintaining a permanent IDF presence to guarantee regional security.
This drastic policy shift follows a severe escalation in regional hostilities. On March 1, Hezbollah officially entered the war against Israel, publicly declaring total solidarity with Iran. In retaliation, the Israeli military unleashed a wave of intense airstrikes targeting Hezbollah strongholds in southern and eastern Lebanon, as well as the suburbs of Beirut.
The intensifying conflict and Israel's military tactics have already sparked international outrage. The Spanish government issued a strong condemnation of the Israeli strikes on Lebanese bridges and residential buildings, labeling the actions a "gross and intentional violation of international humanitarian law."
