Italian Tourist Killed in Massive Fire at Dominican Republic Luxury Resort

A massive fire broke out Friday morning at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe, a popular Caribbean resort town on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, killing one tourist and injuring at least nine others. The dead was identified as Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian national who was staying at the resort.

How the Fire Spread

The blaze began around 11 a.m. local time and quickly spread through the resort's structures. Dominican fire officials said preliminary investigations indicated that the fire spread rapidly due to the flammable nature of roofing materials — parts of the roof were constructed from palm thatch — combined with high wind conditions at the time. The fire took approximately five hours to bring under control.

Mass Evacuation

Dominican Civil Defence personnel coordinated the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests from the sprawling beachside resort. Three of the nine injured guests required off-site medical treatment and were transferred to hospitals in the area. Dominican authorities said the remaining injured were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor burns. All displaced tourists were relocated to hotels in Punta Cana and Bayahibe at the resort operator's expense.

Resort Closure and Investigation

The Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort will remain closed while authorities investigate the cause and extent of the damage. The Dominican tourism minister visited the site and pledged a thorough investigation. The Dominican Republic is one of the most visited destinations in the Caribbean, drawing over 10 million tourists annually, and the government has signalled that fire safety regulations at large resorts will be reviewed in the wake of the incident.
