Jackie the Famous California Bald Eagle Dies After Weeks of Intensive Care

Jackie, the bald eagle who had become an internet sensation through the Big Bear Valley nest camera livestream in California, died on Monday after weeks of veterinary care at the Ojai Raptor Center. The bird had been attacked by other eagles and was suffering from anaemia, weight loss and underlying health complications.

Who Was Jackie

Jackie hatched in spring 2012 and had been a fixture in the Big Bear Valley area of Southern California for over a decade. The Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, run by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, had amassed hundreds of thousands of subscribers from around the world who tuned in to watch Jackie, her partner Shadow, and the pair's eaglets each season. Jackie and Shadow had been mates since 2018.

Final Days

The Ojai Raptor Center described Jackie's condition as having deteriorated despite "intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists." The organisation said: "Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her. We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey."
