England and former Manchester City defender John Stones is in advanced talks with Italian Serie A champions Inter Milan about joining the club on a free transfer, according to reports. The 32-year-old became a free agent after his contract at City expired at the end of June while he was representing England at the World Cup.

Inter leading the race

Several top clubs across Europe expressed interest in Stones, including Chelsea in the Premier League and Juventus in Italy. However, Inter Milan - who won the Serie A title last season - have held the most positive discussions with the centre-back and are understood to be the frontrunners. A two-year deal is reportedly being discussed.

A decorated career at City

Stones made 295 appearances for Manchester City after joining from Everton for £47.5 million in 2016. During his decade at the Etihad, he was part of one of the most successful club sides in English football history, winning six Premier League titles, one UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

International career

A versatile and technically gifted defender, Stones has earned 93 caps for England. He was part of the Three Lions squad that finished third at the most recent World Cup. The move to Inter would reunite him with the top tier of European football as he seeks a new challenge following his City departure.
