Ukraine's EU Envoy Expects Steel Import Curbs to Be Overcome This Year
Taras Kachka, Ukraine's representative to the European Union, believes the market restrictions the EU currently imposes on Ukrainian steelmakers can be overcome by the end of this year. He spoke at the Kyiv International Economic Forum, according to European Pravda.
"We see that the EU is restricting its market quite heavily right now, in particular for metallurgy. I am confident this is a problem of this year that we will resolve, because the European Union understands that we have to settle it constructively," Kachka said.
The restrictions in question
The restrictions are new EU limits on steel imports that, from 1 July 2026, made it harder for Ukrainian metallurgy to reach the European market. The EU explained them as an attempt to protect its own producers from cheap steel imports. Kachka's predecessor, Vsevolod Chentsov, said then that Ukraine considered it necessary to speed up the integration of its steel industry into the European market.
