Boulter exits US Open in first round despite strong start

Katie Boulter, Britain's top female tennis player, has been eliminated from the US Open in the first round, ending her campaign at the final Grand Slam of the year in disappointing fashion.

Boulter, who had been in strong form heading into Flushing Meadows, took the opening set but was unable to maintain her level as the match progressed. Her opponent fought back strongly in the second and third sets to claim victory.

The defeat is a setback for Boulter, who had hoped to use the US Open to build on an impressive hard court season. She had reached the fourth round at Wimbledon this summer and was seeded at Flushing Meadows.

Speaking after the match, Boulter said she was disappointed not to convert her opportunities in the second set: "There were moments in that second set where I felt I could have won it, but she played very well and I have to give her credit for that."

Despite the early exit, Boulter has had a strong season overall and remains in the world top 30. She will now focus on the indoor hard court season as the WTA Tour moves into its autumn phase.
