Kovalenko Steps Down as Head of Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation

1 min read

Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation (CCD) under the National Security and Defence Council, announced his departure from the position on September 28, 2026.

Kovalenko's Role

Since taking leadership of the CCD, Kovalenko became one of the most recognisable faces in Ukraine's information warfare effort. He regularly exposed Russian propaganda narratives, provided analysis of disinformation campaigns, and commented on Russian influence operations targeting Ukraine and Western audiences. His Telegram channel became a widely followed source of real-time fact-checking and debunking.

Kovalenko did not immediately specify his reasons for leaving or what his next steps would be. He stated he was leaving his position.

Significance

The Centre for Countering Disinformation has played a key role in Ukraine's strategic communications efforts since the 2022 full-scale invasion. It monitors and responds to Russian information operations, publishes regular updates on disinformation tactics, and coordinates with international partners on media literacy and counter-influence work. The departure of a high-profile leader comes at a sensitive moment as Ukraine's information war with Russia continues to intensify.
