Latvia's FM: Trump-Putin diesel deal sends a contradictory signal

1 min read

Latvia's Foreign Ministry expressed concern on October 10 over the agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the partial lifting of Russia's diesel fuel export ban.

Contradictory signal to allies

Latvian officials said the Trump-Putin deal on diesel exports sends a contradictory signal regarding transatlantic unity and support for Ukraine at a critical time in the conflict. The Baltic state, which borders Russia and has strongly backed Ukraine since the beginning of the war, views the agreement as undermining the Western sanctions regime against Moscow.

Wider European concern

Latvia is not alone in expressing concern. Several European Union member states have questioned whether the US-Russia deal is consistent with the broader Western strategy of maintaining economic pressure on Russia. Critics argue that easing export restrictions, even partially, could provide Russia with additional revenue to fund its military operations in Ukraine.
