Lemonade and Soviet Uniforms: Russia Stages Fake Duma Elections in Occupied Kherson

In the temporarily occupied parts of Kherson Oblast, Russian forces are staging fake State Duma elections with polling stations styled to recreate different historical eras from the Russian Empire to post-WWII Soviet times. The main voting period began September 18 following 10 days of so-called early voting and runs through September 20.

Themed Polling Stations

At least four polling stations were decorated in different historical styles with commission members in period costumes. In Henichesk, the 1960s Soviet atmosphere was recreated: Soviet-era sodas and pastries, Soviet songs, dominoes, and hats. Photos of the destroyed Kakhovka hydroelectric dam were displayed on stands. In Kalanchak, performers dressed as Catherine the Great and Admiral Ushakov greeted voters. In Chaplynka, the polling station evoked Russia's first State Duma election of 1906. In Novotroitske, staff wore Soviet military uniforms recreating the 1945-1947 post-war elections.

Gifts for Voters

One young man reportedly received headphones, a case, and a notebook for participating. Occupation governor Vladimir Saldo voted at a station named after a killed collaborator, sitting in a retro car and playing dominoes. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry called on the world not to recognize the elections held on occupied Ukrainian territory.
