Lindsay Clancy trial: US mother accused of killing her three children nears verdict

The trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts nurse accused of strangling her three young children in January 2023, is approaching a verdict after closing arguments were heard in court.

Clancy, a 34-year-old labour and delivery nurse, was charged with the murders of her children aged five, three and eight months. She survived the incident after allegedly jumping from a window. Her husband Patrick Clancy, who was out getting food when the incident occurred, has publicly forgiven his wife and has been a visible presence in court throughout the trial.

The defence argued that Clancy was in a drug-induced psychosis at the time, caused by medications prescribed to treat postpartum mental health conditions. Prosecutors argued that the killings were deliberate.

The case has drawn widespread attention in the United States, with many mental health advocates arguing it highlights the inadequacy of treatment for severe postpartum psychiatric conditions. Clancy's medical records showed she had been prescribed numerous medications and had sought help repeatedly in the weeks before the deaths.
