Lithuania Summons Russian Ambassador Over Sabotage in Estonia and Strikes on Ukraine

1 min read

Lithuania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned a representative of the Russian Embassy on September 30 and handed over a formal protest note covering two separate incidents linked to Russian aggression.

The first incident: On August 15, a building of Estonian defense company Milrem Robotics in Tallinn was targeted in an arson and sabotage attack. Estonia's Internal Security Service attributed the attack to the Russian Federation. Lithuania expressed solidarity with Estonia and strongly condemned the act.

The second incident: On September 28, Russian strikes hit the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in downtown Kyiv — a 19th-century historic building — along with a medical facility in the capital and other Ukrainian cities. Two people were killed.

NATO Collective Security

The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry stated: "The protection of civilian objects — including medical, scientific, and educational institutions — is one of the fundamental requirements of international humanitarian law." Lithuania declared that Russia's sabotage, arson, cyberattacks, and missile strikes represent a coordinated destabilization campaign against NATO allies, and that "attacks on one ally are treated as a threat to NATO's collective security."
