Lithuania's President: Russia Deliberately Lets Drones Enter Baltic Airspace

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda stated in an interview with LRT that drone incidents over Baltic states and other Eastern European countries are part of a deliberate Russian strategy to keep societies on edge without triggering a direct confrontation with NATO.

Nauseda's Assessment

The president said: "Russia's behavior is becoming increasingly aggressive. This increasingly points to a certain trend. Not wanting to enter into direct confrontation with NATO, Russia tries to target those countries that are the strongest supporters of Ukraine." He added that such incidents, including drones that stray into national airspace, may be a deliberate Russian act rather than accidents, aimed at keeping publics in a state of anxiety.

Recent Incident

On the night of September 15, NATO patrol mission fighters shot down for the first time an unidentified drone over Lithuania that had entered from Belarus. An explosive device was found at the crash site and neutralized by sappers. Lithuania's Foreign Ministry subsequently summoned Belarus's representative and delivered a protest note over the airspace violation.

Pattern of Pressure

Nauseda's remarks reflect a growing view among Baltic leaders that Russia is using hybrid tactics — drone intrusions, disinformation, infrastructure sabotage — as tools of pressure that fall just below the threshold of formal armed conflict with NATO.
