Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old charged with the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel, appeared in a New York courtroom on Tuesday. The hearing was aimed at finalising procedural rules for what is expected to be one of the most closely watched criminal trials in the United States this year, with jury selection scheduled to begin on 8 September.

Key evidence rulings already decided

Earlier this summer, a judge ruled on which items prosecutors may present during trial. Mangione's defence team had sought to exclude evidence seized during his arrest in Pennsylvania, arguing that police improperly searched his possessions and failed to properly advise him of his rights before questioning. While some items — including a gun magazine, a mobile phone, and personal papers — were excluded, the judge ruled that a firearm and handwritten documents found on Mangione were admissible. These written materials are expected to form a central part of the prosecution's case.

A case that divided opinion

The shooting of Thompson sparked intense debate in the United States about the cost of healthcare and the practices of insurance companies. While Mangione is accused of premeditated murder and faces decades in prison if convicted, an online community of supporters has cast him as a symbol of resistance against a system many perceive as exploitative. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including second-degree murder and weapons offences.
