Lviv Council's 'Shukhevych Year' Vote Sparks New Poland Row

1 min read

A source in the Office of the President told Ukrainska Pravda that the Lviv Regional Council's decision to declare 2027 the year of the UPA, Roman Shukhevych and Oleh Olzhych is a catastrophe. The remark appears in the outlet's article on the new row in Ukrainian-Polish relations.

"Ukraine looks inadequate. We had only just settled the previous crisis - and now this. Everyone knew this should not be done, and the head of the region knew about it personally. But the chase for cheap one-day hype won out. The consequences are already here, and they will only grow," the source said.

What preceded it

On October 20, the Lviv Regional Council voted to declare 2027 the "Year of Roman Shukhevych, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and Oleh Olzhych." Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the decision harms relations between the two countries, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed that the step helps Ukraine's enemies.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry said the decision was made at the regional level, without consulting diplomats or central authorities, and called it "counterproductive" for relations with Poland. According to Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki, representatives of President Zelensky assured Warsaw that the deputies' decision would not take effect, and the resolution has already disappeared from the council's website.
