Macron calls Trump to coordinate response to rising global fuel prices
French President Emmanuel Macron held a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Friday to discuss the coordinated Western response to the surge in global fuel prices, the Elysée Palace confirmed.
The call comes as fuel prices across Europe have climbed to multi-year highs, fuelling inflation concerns and prompting street protests in several countries including France. Paris has been under pressure to act as pump prices exceed previous record levels.
Macron reportedly urged Trump to consider coordinated releases from strategic petroleum reserves and to support diplomatic pressure on OPEC+ producers to increase output. The US and France have differing approaches to the crisis, with Washington preferring market solutions while Paris has pushed for direct intervention.
The conversation is expected to feed into broader G7 discussions on energy markets. French officials said both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as the situation develops.
