A man has been bitten by a blue shark off the coast of Waterford, Ireland, and is set to undergo surgery following the incident. Sebastian Achim was on a small boat and was attempting to tag the blue shark — a common practice among researchers and wildlife enthusiasts — when the animal bit him.

What Happened

Tagging sharks involves attaching a small identification device to the fish, usually by hand from a boat, to track their movements and gather research data. The process brings people into close proximity with the animals and carries an inherent risk. Experienced fishermen in the area noted that the shark was acting naturally in its environment and that Achim acknowledged the risk involved.

The Blue Shark

Blue sharks are the most common species of shark found in Irish and UK waters. They are generally not considered aggressive towards humans but, like all wild animals, can bite when they feel threatened or are handled. Achim's injury required medical attention and he is scheduled for surgery to treat the wound sustained during the encounter.
