Man Confesses to Killing Scottish Woman Whose Body Was Found in Suitcase in Athens

Greek police have announced that a man has confessed to killing a Scottish woman whose body was found in a suitcase in an abandoned Athens building. Elisabeth-Jane Ross, 38, known as Lisa, was discovered in the Kypseli district on 18 July, days after her family reported her missing.

Authorities arrested a 26-year-old man, understood by the BBC to be of Afghan nationality, following an international investigation with law enforcement in the US, UK and Scotland. The suspect confessed to his actions when brought to police headquarters on Thursday.

He was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, robbery and weapons offences. Police allege he transported Lisa's body in the suitcase and used her bank cards to withdraw money. A replica pistol and a knife were seized at his home.

Lisa arrived in Greece on 26 June and stayed in the Piraeus area with Greek friends. She told them on 15 July she was planning to visit American acquaintances in Kypseli. She left her previous accommodation on 10 July. Police are fast-tracking toxicology tests to determine the cause of death and are tracing the American acquaintances.

Scottish First Minister John Swinney called the case absolutely appalling and expressed sympathies to Lisa's family. The swift international cooperation between Greek, US, UK and Scottish authorities has been widely praised.
