Russia builds apartments on ruins of Mariupol homes

In occupied Mariupol, Russian construction companies are erecting new apartment towers directly on the sites where Ukrainian homes once stood before being destroyed in the 2022 invasion. The developer Su-2007 is marketing a project called Leningradsky Kvartal (Leningrad Quarter), a name that echoes Soviet-era branding.

New buildings, displaced residents

Former Mariupol residents who were forced to flee during the siege have no means of returning to reclaim their properties. The land has been reassigned under Russian occupation law, and construction proceeds without regard to prior ownership.

Who is buying?

According to DW reporting, buyers are predominantly Russian citizens relocating from other parts of Russia. The developments are marketed as modern housing in a rebuilt city, erasing evidence of the destruction wrought by the invasion.

Mariupol was largely destroyed during Russia's siege in spring 2022. Thousands of civilians were killed, and hundreds of thousands fled. Human rights organizations have documented the systematic demolition of Ukrainian residential districts and their replacement with Russian-branded developments as a form of cultural erasure.
