McConnell Remains in Rehab, Will Miss Kentucky's Fancy Farm

Senator Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving Republican Senate leader in U.S. history, will miss this Saturday's Fancy Farm political event in Kentucky — a tradition he has rarely skipped — because he remains confined to a rehabilitation facility following a fall on June 14 that left him briefly unconscious. His office made the announcement on Monday, July 27.

"I'm still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors' orders. Unfortunately, that means I won't be able to make it to Fancy Farm, Kentucky this Saturday," McConnell said in a statement. "As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I'm looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon."

Medical Status

The Office of the Attending Physician confirmed that McConnell is undergoing multiple physical therapy and rehabilitation sessions each day, but is "not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office." The therapy is designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls.

McConnell's office also released a new photograph of the senator with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, taken Sunday, July 26 — the first public image of him in weeks. The senator has not been seen on Capitol Hill since June 11, more than six weeks ago.

McConnell, 84, was hospitalized on June 14, though his team initially released few details, prompting calls for transparency from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and others. He disclosed on July 12 that the fall had briefly rendered him unconscious and that he had also dealt with a mild case of pneumonia during his hospitalization.

The senator has stated his intention to serve out the remainder of his term, which expires in January 2027. He has announced he will not seek reelection, bringing an end to a Senate career that began in 1985.
