Germany's Merz Says Trump's Russia Diesel Deal Is Unacceptable
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed disagreement with US President Donald Trump's decision to unilaterally lift sanctions on Russia and allow it to export diesel fuel to global markets. Merz stated the move is unacceptable and contradicts the Western coalition's approach to maintaining pressure on Russia.
Germany's Position
Merz's statement adds Germany to a growing list of Western allies criticizing Trump's diesel deal with Vladimir Putin, which was announced on October 9. Germany has been among the most vocal supporters of keeping sanctions pressure on Russia throughout its war against Ukraine.
Growing Western Opposition
The UK also announced it does not support the agreement. Ukraine's President Zelensky called the deal unfair and dishonest. The agreement has created visible tensions within the Western alliance over Russia policy, particularly after Trump also suggested Ukraine needs new leadership.
