Couple Killed by Sea Mine Explosion Near Kobleve, Ukraine

An anti-landing sea mine detonated in the waters off Kobleve in Mykolaiv region on Saturday afternoon, killing a couple and wounding two others who had entered a section of the Black Sea coast that was fenced off and marked with mine-hazard warnings.

The victims were a 43-year-old man and his 42-year-old wife, who both died at the scene. Their 16-year-old daughter was wounded and received medical treatment on an outpatient basis. A 40-year-old woman was hospitalized in critical condition.

Closed Beach, Ignored Warnings

Mykolaiv regional military administration head Heorhii Reshetilov confirmed the coastal section was closed, fenced and posted with notices warning of mines. The group had crossed the barriers. "I understand the desire of people to have access to the sea and the request to open the coastline in Kobleve. But today's tragedy proves once again: no decision to open the beaches can be made until specialists confirm it is safe to be there. The price of hasty decisions can be too high — and it will be paid in human lives," Reshetilov said.

The risk of sea mines along Ukraine's Black Sea coast has risen sharply since the outbreak of the full-scale war in 2022. Mines drifting from mined zones have regularly reached shores in Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria, making coastline access dangerous even in areas not directly targeted by Russian forces.
