The German mini-series 'Breitscheidplatz 19/12', released internationally as 'Blindspot Berlin', had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The series revisits the December 19, 2016 terrorist attack on Berlin's Breitscheidplatz Christmas market, in which Anis Amri drove a truck into the crowd, killing 12 people and injuring many more. An additional victim died later from their injuries. Director David Nawrath said the series focuses on the 'system failure and shocking blindness' of German security authorities. Amri had been known to German intelligence services and was under surveillance, yet was not stopped before carrying out the attack. The series examines how bureaucratic failures and intelligence gaps allowed the tragedy to occur. The premiere generated significant discussion among audiences and critics, particularly given the approaching anniversary of the attack and ongoing debates in Germany about security services reform.
