Moldova Aligns Daylight Saving Time Transition with the European Union for the First Time

In a historic move, Moldova has officially synchronized its transition to daylight saving time (DST) with the European Union and Ukraine, effectively ending its reliance on Soviet-era timekeeping regulations.

A Shift in the Schedule

Following a government decision adopted in late February, Moldova will now adjust its clocks simultaneously with the EU. Previously, the Eastern European nation shifted its time an hour earlier—at 2:00 AM local time in March and at 3:00 AM in October. Under the newly implemented system, the transition will occur at 3:00 AM in the spring and 4:00 AM in the autumn, ensuring complete alignment with European standards.

The European Context

Within the European Union, time changes are strictly coordinated, with DST beginning on the last Sunday of March and concluding on the last Sunday of October. Despite this synchronization, the broader debate over the necessity of bi-annual clock changes continues.

The European Commission recently reiterated that any potential abolition of the summer and winter time transitions remains at the discretion of individual member states. Meanwhile, reports from 2025 indicated that Lithuania intends to bring the issue of scrapping daylight saving time to the forefront during its presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027.
