Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Court Sentences MP Yurchenko to 9 Years for Bribery

Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) has sentenced Member of Parliament Oleksandr Yurchenko to nine years in prison for receiving an improper advantage — the Ukrainian legal term for bribery. The court also ordered the confiscation of his assets. The verdict may be appealed through the standard judicial process.

Yurchenko was a member of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament). His case was investigated by Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and prosecuted by the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), which handle high-profile corruption cases involving public officials and elected representatives.

Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Architecture

The HACC was established in 2019 specifically to handle corruption cases involving senior officials, members of parliament, judges, and prosecutors. Its creation was one of the key institutional reforms required by Ukraine's international partners, including the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, as a condition of financial support.

Ukraine has intensified its anti-corruption efforts since the start of the war, both to meet EU integration requirements and to demonstrate accountability to the international community providing military and financial assistance. The Ukrainian parliament has seen a number of its members face serious legal proceedings in recent years.
