Myanmar Military Expands Conscription as Civil War Intensifies
Myanmar's military junta has expanded its conscription program, calling up more men and women for military service as the civil war between the junta and resistance forces intensifies. The move comes as junta-controlled territory continues to shrink under pressure from ethnic armed organizations and the People's Defence Force.
Human rights groups report that many conscripts are unwilling and that desertion rates have increased. Some flee the country to avoid military service.
The UN called on the junta to end the conflict and engage in dialogue, while humanitarian organizations warn of a worsening crisis for the civilian population.
