NATO Shoots Down Drone Over Latvia

NATO fighter jets shot down a drone in Latvian airspace early Friday morning in what the Latvian army described as a significant air defense incident. The drone, which Latvian authorities said was foreign and had entered Latvian airspace as a result of Russian electronic warfare jamming, was neutralized, and the threat was declared eliminated. Air alarms that had been in effect in areas near the Russian border were lifted after the incident.

The Latvian military's description of the drone as deflected by Russian electronic warfare strongly suggests the unmanned aircraft was a Ukrainian drone pushed off course. Finland simultaneously established a temporary restricted flight zone in the eastern Gulf of Finland as a precautionary measure, with the Finnish military citing the need to protect civilians and maintain operational capacity against possible drone threats.

Iran Attacks UAE Ships in the Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates accused Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of attacking two vessels belonging to the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), a state-owned energy company, in the Strait of Hormuz. The UAE's Foreign Ministry in Abu Dhabi stated that no injuries were reported in the incident, but condemned the attacks as “acts of piracy” that threaten regional stability and global energy security.

The UAE called on Iran to stop what it described as “unprovoked attacks” and to ensure the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping. The strait, through which a significant share of the world's oil exports pass, has been under severe disruption since US-Israeli airstrikes against Iran began in late February 2026, sparking the current conflict.
