Nepal flood reconstruction needs reach $4.8 billion as death toll continues to rise

Nepal's annual monsoon season has resulted in catastrophic flooding in 2026, with preliminary assessments putting the reconstruction and recovery needs at approximately $4.8 billion, according to government and international aid organization estimates. The floods, which have affected dozens of districts across Nepal, have caused significant loss of life, with hundreds killed and many still missing. The official death toll continues to climb as rescue teams reach previously inaccessible areas. Critical infrastructure including roads, bridges, schools, and healthcare facilities has been destroyed or severely damaged across affected regions. Thousands of families have been displaced from their homes and are currently sheltering in temporary facilities. Nepal faces a significant financing gap in its recovery efforts, with domestic government resources insufficient to cover the enormous costs. International donors, including UN agencies, the World Bank, and bilateral partners, are being called upon to contribute. Climate scientists note that Nepal's vulnerability to extreme weather events including floods and landslides has increased as a result of climate change, raising concerns about the frequency and severity of future flood seasons.
