New Forest Wildfire Brought Under Control but Firefighting to Last Days

A devastating wildfire in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire has been brought under control, but the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said it expects a significant presence at the scene for several more days. The blaze started shortly after 17:20 BST on Sunday when a van caught fire on the A31 near Bratley Wood, forcing motorists to abandon more than 20 vehicles on the carriageway.

Damage to Protected Land

The area burned includes nationally protected heathland, home to several rare species, according to the New Forest National Park Authority. Aerial footage showed scorched vegetation spreading in a south-easterly direction as winds fanned the flames. Smoke drifted across both sides of the Solent estuary, prompting the fire service to urge residents to keep windows and doors shut.

Disruption

National Highways confirmed the A31 dual carriageway through the New Forest would remain closed until further notice. The fire service warned the public to avoid the area while work continues. One witness described seeing a family concerned their car might catch fire as flames spread nearby. "We expect to have a significant presence for several days, as we work to protect this beautiful part of the New Forest," the service said.
