North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile 1,000 km Toward Sea of Japan

1 min read

North Korea conducted a training launch of a strategic medium-range ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan in the early hours of October 4, state media reported via the KCNA news agency.

Key Details

According to Pyongyang, the missile was launched from an eastern region of North Korea and flew northeast, accurately striking a target located 1,000 km away. The stated goal of the exercise was to verify the readiness of deterrent forces and sharpen the skills of personnel operating hypersonic strategic systems.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally observed the launches, accompanied by his wife Ri Sol Ju, his daughter Kim Ju Ae, and senior military officials.

Kim Jong Un stated that North Korea must continuously demonstrate the reliability and lethality of its strategic offensive weapons to its adversaries.

Background

The launch comes amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula. In September, a mine explosion in the demilitarized zone wounded three South Korean soldiers, with Seoul holding Pyongyang responsible. Kim stressed the launch was part of ongoing efforts to bolster the country's nuclear deterrence and announced continued buildup of its nuclear arsenal.
