Nottingham NHS Trust Faces Manslaughter Probe Over Killer's Care

Police have launched a corporate manslaughter investigation into Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust following mounting evidence that the trust failed to provide adequate care to Valdo Calocane before he carried out a deadly knife attack in Nottingham in 2023 that claimed three lives.

The investigation marks one of the most significant criminal probes into an NHS trust in recent years, raising profound questions about the responsibilities of mental health services when patients with complex needs are released into the community.

The Nottingham Attacks

In June 2023, Valdo Calocane stabbed and killed three people in Nottingham in a series of attacks in the early morning hours. The victims were Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19-year-old students at the University of Nottingham, and Ian Coates, 65, a school caretaker. A further three people were injured in vehicle attacks.

Calocane pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to paranoid schizophrenia. He was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order rather than a prison term, a decision that sparked considerable public outrage and calls for a review of how the justice system handles cases involving mental illness.

Failures in Care

An independent inquiry found that Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust had repeatedly failed to adequately monitor and treat Calocane in the years before the attacks, despite multiple contacts with mental health services. He had missed appointments, stopped taking medication, and showed escalating signs of psychotic illness, yet was not brought back into inpatient care.
