OpenAI announced Wednesday that its internal artificial intelligence system has solved the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem — one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems identified by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000, each carrying a $1 million prize.

The Navier-Stokes equations describe the motion of fluids and gases and are fundamental to aircraft design, weather forecasting, and the study of blood circulation. The open question is whether smooth, globally defined solutions always exist when given reasonable initial conditions.

Historic Mathematical Breakthrough

The Clay Institute's Millennium Problems represent the most important unsolved questions in mathematics. Only one had previously been solved: the Poincaré Conjecture, proved by Grigori Perelman in 2003. If OpenAI's claim is independently verified, it would mark the second resolution in a quarter century — and the first achieved by artificial intelligence.

OpenAI presented its findings at a press briefing for journalists and published details on its website. The company cited independent coverage in Quanta Magazine. The solution's validity will require peer review by leading mathematicians before the prize can be awarded.
