Opening Statements Begin in Long-Awaited Tupac Murder Trial

The long-awaited murder trial of Tupac Shakur began on Monday with opening statements from both prosecution and defence. The case centres on Duane Keith Davis, known as Keefe D, a gang leader accused of orchestrating the killing of the iconic rapper who was shot in a Las Vegas drive-by in September 1996.

What the Jury Heard

Attorneys on both sides painted vivid portraits of the 1990s hip-hop scene: bitter East Coast-West Coast rivalries, gang street violence, and deep distrust of law enforcement. Prosecutors argued that Davis, as a senior member of the South Side Compton Crips, ordered the hit on Shakur in retaliation for an earlier altercation.

Defence attorneys challenged the reliability of witnesses and the evidence chain, arguing that decades of delay have compromised the integrity of the case.

A Case Decades in the Making

Tupac Shakur's murder remained unsolved for more than 25 years, one of the most prominent cold cases in music history. Davis, who previously admitted in a memoir that he was in the car from which Shakur was shot, was arrested in 2023. His trial has reignited public fascination with the case, symbolic of the violent tensions that gripped the American rap industry in the mid-1990s.
