Owner of Iconic Raleigh Bicycle Brand Files for Insolvency

Accell Group, the Dutch cycling conglomerate and owner of some of Europe's best-known bicycle brands including Raleigh, Batavus, and Sparta, has filed for insolvency protection with a Dutch court. The move threatens thousands of jobs across its European operations and has shocked an industry that boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic years.

A Post-Pandemic Hangover

Bicycle sales surged across Europe between 2020 and 2022 as people sought alternatives to public transport. Manufacturers ramped up production and accumulated large inventories. However, demand normalized sharply from 2023 onward as lockdowns ended and consumer spending shifted. Accell was particularly exposed to the e-bike market, where supply chain disruptions led to component cost increases that eroded margins. The company had already issued a profit warning in 2025 and launched cost-cutting measures that proved insufficient.

What Happens to Raleigh

The Raleigh brand, which dates back to Nottingham in 1887 and once built the world's largest bicycle factory, is now primarily a licensing and marketing operation, with manufacturing outsourced. Administrators appointed by the court will attempt to find buyers for the brand and its associated assets. Industry analysts say Raleigh's heritage value makes it attractive to potential acquirers. However, thousands of Accell employees in the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK face an uncertain future pending the outcome of the proceedings.
