Germany's Pistorius Proposes Air Defense Dome for Ukrainian Cities

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius unveiled a proposal on Monday, September 8, 2026, for a comprehensive air defense dome system to shield Ukrainian cities from the relentless barrage of Russian missile and drone attacks. Pistorius called for European coordination to deploy multiple layers of air defense — integrating systems like Patriot, IRIS-T, and NASAMS — to create overlapping protective coverage over key urban centers.

The concept draws inspiration from Israel's Iron Dome model, adapted to the scale and geography of Ukrainian cities. Pistorius noted that Russia's intensified aerial campaign against civilian infrastructure demands a strategic, systematic air defense architecture rather than reactive piecemeal deployments.
