Polish security services have announced the arrest of a teenager accused of carrying out a series of sabotage actions on behalf of Russian intelligence, in an operation aimed at destabilising relations between Poland and Ukraine by inciting ethnic tensions between the two neighbouring countries.
According to Polish authorities, the suspect was recruited and directed by Russian intelligence operatives and was tasked with undertaking physical acts of sabotage alongside efforts to spread disinformation aimed at turning Poles against Ukrainians. The aim, security officials said, was to undermine solidarity between Poland and Ukraine at a critical point in the war against Russia.
The specific nature of the sabotage actions has not been fully disclosed, as the investigation remains ongoing. However, Polish security services said the case was part of a broader pattern of Russian intelligence activity targeting Central and Eastern European countries with the goal of weakening support for Ukraine.
The arrest fits into a well-documented pattern of Russian hybrid warfare operations across Europe, which have included arson attacks, sabotage of military supply chains, cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns. Several NATO member states, including Germany, the Czech Republic and the Baltic states, have arrested individuals in recent years linked to similar Russian-directed operations.
Polish authorities have been on high alert for Russian intelligence activity since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, given Poland's role as a key transit hub for Western military aid flowing into Ukraine.
The use of teenagers or young adults as unwitting or recruited operatives has been a notable feature of recent Russian intelligence operations in Europe. Security analysts suggest that younger individuals may be more easily recruited through social media platforms and less likely to attract immediate scrutiny from counterintelligence services.
The Polish government has called on the European Union to strengthen collective defences against Russian hybrid warfare, including coordinated responses to intelligence operations directed at member states.
