Poland Reinforces Ukraine Border Posts With Army Unit

The Polish government has decided to strengthen security at its border crossing points with Ukraine in response to the threat posed by Russian military activity. Protection of checkpoints and border infrastructure will be reinforced using the 18th Pontoon Bridge Regiment, the operational command of Poland's Armed Forces announced.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated: "Recent days show that Russia's actions threaten the security of all of Europe. According to our government's decision, the infrastructure used by the Border Guard Service is being strengthened."

New Observation Posts at Key Crossings

The operational command announced that new surveillance posts will be erected near the Polish-Ukrainian border at Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korchova, three of the most heavily used crossing points between the two countries.

Drone Attacks Prompted the Decision

The security reinforcement follows a series of Russian drone strikes close to the border. On the night of September 13, a drone struck a truck near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing. A separate strike hit a Ukrzaliznytsia locomotive just 2 kilometers from the Polish border; Ukrainian Railways said it could not rule out that the target had been a train carrying foreign guests, which had used the same route shortly before the attack.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk subsequently announced plans to accelerate border movement to prevent vehicle build-ups that could become targets for Russian attacks.

The measures reflect the escalating risk to European border infrastructure as Russia expands its strike operations closer to the Polish frontier.
