Poland launches second search operation for remains of fallen Ukrainian soldiers
Poland has launched its second search and recovery operation to locate the remains of Ukrainian soldiers who were killed in combat. The operation is part of a broader bilateral humanitarian initiative agreed between Poland and Ukraine to help identify and repatriate fallen Ukrainian defenders.
Polish search teams, working alongside Ukrainian counterparts, use archival documents, battlefield maps, survivor testimonies, and forensic techniques to systematically search areas where combat deaths were recorded. Remains recovered are identified through DNA analysis and returned to families for proper burial.
The first search operation, conducted earlier in 2026, recovered and identified a number of fallen soldiers, providing closure to families who had been uncertain of their loved ones' fates. Polish officials said the second operation would expand the search area and involve more personnel.
Poland has been one of Ukraine's most active supporters throughout the war, providing military equipment, financial assistance, and humanitarian aid. The search operation represents a particularly personal form of solidarity — helping Ukrainian families receive the remains of their sons, husbands, and brothers who died defending their country.
