Poland's Interior Minister Marcin Kierzwinski declared Russia to be the enemy of the free world on Sunday, as Warsaw responded to Russian drone and missile strikes that hit dangerously close to the Polish border with Ukraine.

The minister's statement came as Polish authorities were verifying information provided by Ukrainian railway operators and politicians regarding a Russian attack on a train near the border. Polish defense and foreign ministries were contacted by journalists to confirm details of the incident.

Warsaw takes the threat seriously

Speaking to broadcaster RMF FM, Kierzwinski underlined that Poland takes the strikes near its territory with the utmost seriousness. The Interior Minister's remarks reflect a broader Polish political consensus that Russia poses a direct threat to NATO members in Central Europe.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk subsequently called an emergency security meeting to assess the situation. Poland has been one of Ukraine's strongest supporters during the war, providing substantial military and financial assistance while also hosting millions of Ukrainian refugees.
