Poland Scrambles Aircraft as Russia Launches Attacks on Ukraine
Poland activated its air force on the evening of October 5, 2026, scrambling aircraft in response to a major Russian aerial attack package targeting Ukraine, the Polish military confirmed.
NATO Eastern Flank Response
This activation is part of standard NATO protocols when Russia launches large-scale aerial attacks on Ukraine. Polish aircraft patrol the border area to ensure that no Russian missiles or drones cross into NATO territory, where they could trigger Article 5 collective defense obligations.
Poland has repeatedly scrambled jets during Russian mass attacks on Ukraine throughout the war. The country shares a border with Ukraine and has been one of Kyiv's most active supporters, both militarily and politically.
Scale of Russian Attacks
The October 5 attack package was among the more significant barrages in recent weeks. Russian guided bombs struck Kharkiv, killing six people and wounding 59. Drone strikes knocked out power for 14,000 consumers in Poltava region, and debris from an intercepted drone started fires in Kyiv.
Poland also announced this week an increase in military presence in Lublin Voivodeship bordering Ukraine, further strengthening its eastern defenses.
NATO Support for Ukraine
Poland has also established a refugee center for potential Lithuanian evacuees in case of Russian attack, demonstrating the broad security planning taking place among NATO's eastern members in response to ongoing Russian aggression.
