Politico Poll: 54% of Americans Say Trump Committed Impeachable Offenses
Fifty-four percent of Americans believe US President Donald Trump committed offenses that are grounds for impeachment, a new Politico poll conducted from October 16 to 19 shows, as reported by European Pravda.
According to the results, 81% of voters who plan to support Democrats in the midterm congressional elections, and a quarter of Republican voters who will take part, believe Trump committed offenses that should trigger impeachment proceedings. More than 41% of respondents said he used the presidency to gain financially for himself or his family. A third of participants think Democrats should first investigate how he enriched himself, while another third think they should focus on his harsh measures against immigrants.
Split views on impeachment as a campaign theme
Most members of both political camps said Trump's first two impeachments had no effect on the president or his political course. More Americans think another impeachment would make Trump more popular (24%) than less popular (18%). Democratic voters are also divided on whether their candidates should raise impeachment in midterm campaigns: 43% think they should announce impeachment plans even if it costs Democrats votes, while 41% favor avoiding the topic if it helps them win.
The US House of Representatives impeached Trump twice during his first term — in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and in 2021 for incitement of insurrection during the storming of the Capitol. To impeach a president, the decision must be approved by both chambers of Congress — a majority of the House (218 votes) and two-thirds of the Senate (67 votes). No US president has ever been removed from office through this procedure.
