Speaking from the balcony of the Prince's Palace to a cheering crowd, the American-born Pope delivered a poignant message about global responsibility. He warned that the world is currently suffering from a "display of power and the logic of abuse of power," which actively harms humanity and endangers international peace. He emphasized that the privilege of living in Monaco carries a profound moral obligation to help the disadvantaged.
Monaco, widely known as a tax haven for the global elite, is home to citizens from approximately 150 nations. The Pope noted that this diverse microcosm consists of a vibrant local minority and a vast majority of international residents, many of whom hold significant economic and financial influence. "Living here is a privilege for some, and a special invitation for all to question their own place in the world," the pontiff stated, calling on the financial sector to prioritize justice.
The Pope was officially welcomed at the palace by Prince Albert II, Princess Charlene, and their children, Gabriella and Jacques, along with other members of the Grimaldi family. Addressing the public, Prince Albert expressed deep gratitude for the visit and highlighted the centuries-old relationship between Monaco and the Catholic Church. Monaco remains one of the few countries in the world where Catholicism is the official state religion, representing over 80 percent of the Monegasque population.
This trip represents a significant diplomatic and religious milestone. The last papal stopover in the Mediterranean principality occurred nearly five centuries ago, when Paul III visited in 1538 following peace negotiations in Nice. This brief excursion is only the second international trip for Pope Leo XIV since he assumed the papacy in May 2025, following his inaugural six-day tour to Turkey and Lebanon in late November.
