President posthumously awards Hero of Ukraine to fallen MiG-29 pilot Mambetov

1 min read

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a decree posthumously awarding the title of Hero of Ukraine, the country's highest state honor, to MiG-29 pilot whose call sign was Mambetov. The pilot was killed in combat while intercepting Russian aerial attacks on Ukrainian territory.

The presidential decree recognizes exceptional personal courage and bravery displayed during combat missions to defend Ukrainian airspace. Mambetov's unit was part of the Ukrainian Air Force's fighter aviation, which has played a crucial role in defending against Russia's ongoing aerial bombardment campaign.

Ukrainian fighter pilots have faced enormous challenges throughout the war, flying aging Soviet-era aircraft against modern Russian air defenses and aviation. Many have been killed in action. Ukraine has been seeking modern Western fighter jets, including F-16s, to replace its aging fleet and improve its aerial defense capabilities.

The posthumous award reflects Ukraine's practice of honoring fallen defenders through official state recognition. Zelensky has signed numerous such decrees throughout the war to commemorate those killed in defense of the country.
