Putin's Party Wins Russian Elections With 58%, Extending Supermajority
Russia's ruling party United Russia secured approximately 58% of the vote in parliamentary elections, near-final results showed on September 21. The outcome is expected to substantially enlarge the party's existing two-thirds majority in the State Duma, cementing the Kremlin's grip on the legislative branch ahead of continued military operations in Ukraine.
Election results
According to official results after counting most ballots, United Russia outpaced all other parties by a wide margin. The Communist Party and the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia came in distant second and third places. Kremlin critics and independent observers raised allegations of widespread manipulation, including ballot stuffing and pressure on public sector workers.
Political significance
A reinforced supermajority in the Duma will give the Kremlin the legislative capacity to amend the constitution and pass laws without opposition, effectively removing any institutional constraint on Russia's executive power during wartime.
Context
The elections were held across Russia and in areas of Ukraine that Russia claims to have annexed but does not fully control. Western governments and international observers generally do not recognize the legitimacy of elections held in occupied Ukrainian territories.
