Putin's Visit to Kuril Islands Stirs Japan-Russia Territorial Dispute

📅 Aug 17, 2026⏱ 1 min read💬 0 comments

Russian President Vladimir Putin made a high-profile visit to the disputed Kuril Islands, a cluster of Pacific islands claimed by both Russia and Japan since the end of World War II. The visit is widely interpreted as a calculated electoral move ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for September, with Putin seeking to rally domestic support around nationalist themes.

The Kuril Islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories, have been at the centre of a decades-long diplomatic standoff between Moscow and Tokyo. Japan has never formally recognised Russian sovereignty over the islands and regularly protests Russian activities there. Putin's visit is expected to further complicate diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The move is also seen as an attempt to undermine Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi, who has taken a tougher stance on Russia than her predecessors. Analysts noted that the timing of the visit — weeks before the Russian parliamentary vote — was clearly designed to send a domestic political signal.
