Russian President Vladimir Putin made a high-profile visit to the disputed Kuril Islands, a cluster of Pacific islands claimed by both Russia and Japan since the end of World War II. The visit is widely interpreted as a calculated electoral move ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for September, with Putin seeking to rally domestic support around nationalist themes.

The Kuril Islands, known in Japan as the Northern Territories, have been at the centre of a decades-long diplomatic standoff between Moscow and Tokyo.
